The Haircut

Well, I have had two haircuts in the last two days. Yes, one was intentional and the other not exactly.

My friend’s daughter thought that my hair should be shorter and before I realized it, she was making that a reality. For a five-year-old she did a great job and the cut was free. So I figured I came out ahead of the game.

I am a firm believer that hair does grow back and a bad haircut has never ruined me. I also had a lot of layers so a couple of misaligned pieces weren’t really noticeable.

That leads me to cut number two, the not-so-free haircut. I have to admit that having a true professional cut your hair makes a difference. And not to be vain, but I do have a wedding to go to over the holidays.

My friend was seriously upset. Understandably, you can’t have your kids cutting random people’s hair, and I have to admit that I was a little shocked when it happened, but I thought the whole thing was pretty funny. It is a terribly good story.

I remember the days when I used to get perms. Then there was that phase with bangs. And I had the Rachel haircut for a year or two. Thankfully, I did have enough sense to stay away from the mullet.

Looking back on those awful styles, a minor run-in with a five-year-old is nothing to sweat. It is just a good reminder that life is all about the story.

Jimmmmmaaaaayyyyyy!!!!!!

My friends, Scott and Sarah, decided to have a bash in Atlantic City to celebrate their upcoming birthdays. Gambling, alcohol and my friends – what could go wrong?

We arrived at the Econo Lodge in Sommer’s Point, NJ, just outside of Atlantic City on Saturday afternoon. That’s right, we’re high rollers. The hotel was completely empty, but we were asked to give our license plate numbers. Apparently, “we’re the only two cars here is the appropriate answer.”

We settled into the hotel rooms and decided to hit the T.G.I. Friday’s across the street before heading to the big AC. Like I said before, we’re high rollers. A couple of beers later we were ready to gamble.

We asked the bartender to call a cab. Twenty minutes later a van pulled up. And that’s when we met Jimmy (a.k.a. Jimmmmmaaaayyyyyyy). Let’s just say, Jimmy was the man. He was our own personal cab-driver extraordinaire.

On our way to Atlantic City, Jimmy wowed us with stories of big wins and bad driving. We all arrived at the Tropicana in one piece and worked out a deal with Jimmy to pick us up later that night. Those cabbies are sooooo smart - get the money before everyone loses it.

We made a quick lap around the casino, realizing that somehow we missed coming in at the VIP entrance. Anyway, the boys raced off to the Blackjack tables and the girls sought out the slots.

I sat down at the first machine and won $6.55. WoooooooWooooo. I was off to a great start. We played a couple more machine and then ventured off to find our luck else where. Sarah and I stumbled upon the Dick Clark’s Rockin New Year’s Eve slot machine.

This game was crazy. Complete with its own video countdown, we were able to ring in the New Year several times. Sarah and I, never being ones to miss a good time, counted along with the machine each time the video showed the ball dropping in Times Square.

I have to say that Dick treated us pretty well. Sarah and I both came out ahead and decided to meet back up with the group for dinner.

We wined and dinned at P.F. Chang’s, gambled some more and after the boy’s lost a significant amount of money decided to go. We called our good friend, Jimmy, and he was there in a flash. Jimmy suggested that we check out a local bar called Caroline’s. Not ready to call it a night, we agreed.

Now a little more about Jimmy –
Jimmy belongs in the tour guide category of cabbies. You know the type who like to point out local historical places and other interesting things. On the way back from Tropicana, Jimmy gave us the tour. He took us the back way to the bar pointing out houses his father built and telling us who lived where. Then the tour took a weird turn.

Jimmy pointed out to us where the bodies of recently murdered girls had shown up. At this point let’s just say horror movie scenes started running through our heads. Okay, there were eight of us someone could call 911 before he got us all. Maybe the drinking and time of night was going to our heads because we arrived at Caroline’s without incident and police intervention.

Caroline’s was filled with practically every Jersey stereotype imaginable. Thankfully we found a table in an empty section at the back of the bar. We hung out, talked and I helped Annie find a man. Okay, I’m not the best wing-woman in the world. I did get a “What’s up shortie?” so I was pleased.

After an hour and a half, as you could imagine, we were dying to get out of there. Magically, the phone rang and it was Jimmy. “Hey, I’m outside whenever you are ready to leave.” And in the words of my friend, Sarah, “I’ve never seen Bridgman move that fast.” Jimmy was our hero.

Jimmy dropped us off at the hotel and we called it a night. It was a good trip.

I Wish You a Kate Spade Christmas

I have now officially entered my holiday panic. I am planning on going to Atlantic City next weekend for Sarah and Scott’s birthday party. That is going to be an all weekend event and so this weekend is my last weekend before Christmas.

Usually I am on top of the holiday checklist. By this time, I have picked out Christmas cards, purchased gifts and just have a few last minute things to do. This year I haven’t even started and I have to do everything this weekend.

In an effort to make productive use of my time, I decided to find some Christmas cards during lunch. I always manage to find great Chaunukah cards, it’s just difficult to find 20 or so fun boxed Christmas cards that don’t cost a fortune.

Part of the problem is that I am a freak about cards. I love sending them. I will search and search to find the right card for a person. Not only does the card have to be perfect for the recipient, but I feel that it has to represent me. So you can see my dilemma.

I started my search at Borders and to no avail. Sure they had plenty of cards, but nothing that really stood out. There were a lot of old fashioned holiday scenes, but nothing really modern and kind of graphic. I like penguins and snowmen, maybe reindeer or mixed drinks – you know something fun.

Feeling a little discouraged I headed to the stationary store around the corner. I sifted through piles and piles of cards, still not having any luck. As I headed to the other side of the store, I saw them. Very graphic, very colorful and totally me. Hope, Peace and Cookies – exactly what the holidays should be.

I picked up the box and realized they were Kate Spade cards. I could feel the sinking feeling in my stomach. This wasn’t going to be pretty, but I had to see how much they cost.

$34. That’s right - $34 for 10 cards. It would cost me $68 not including tax to send a card to everyone on my list.

I really do love Kate Spade. If I could, I would live in the Kate Spade world. I even went so far as getting a chocolate brown Kate Spade cover for my iPod, but I feel that getting $68 Kate Spade Christmas cards crosses a line. Seriously, it’s paper. What magical trees did she cut down because those cards sure weren’t printed on recycled paper?

So for all that effort, I’m back to square one. Hopefully I’ll find something I like this weekend. In the meantime, I hope that everyone enjoys the photo – it’s the card that you won’t be receiving this year.

Hooray for Hats!

My knitting group met tonight and I have to say it was a much needed break. It was only my second time with the group, but everyone is really nice and extremely helpful. I was able to really relax and spend a couple of hours doing something that I enjoy.

I completed my first for-real scarf and it was actually the right length. I felt great giving them a piece that I was proud of. I am sure that someone will put it to good use.

After conquering the wonderful world of scarves, I decided to venture into hats. Yes, Wendy, you are finally getting hats!

I can’t believe the progress I made in one evening. Scarves take hours and hours to complete and I was excited to discover that I can fly through hats. I was a little unsure of the project at first, I didn’t think that it would be stretchy enough to fit on someone’s head, but persistence has paid off. I have a great looking piece and the yarn is incredibly soft.

Sometimes finding success in the smallest projects can remind you of your potential.

What do you do when there isn’t a plan?

There are times when I just wish I could go home. I want to go back to being a kid. Life was so simple. I always had a plan. Life was perfectly mapped out. I would eventually graduate high school (that seemed like it would never happen), I would go to college and get a job. When you are 13, this is a great plan.

Now I’m 24, I have a job and I don’t have a plan. All upcoming milestones have no foreseeable date. Sure, I’ll get married one day and I’ll probably have a kid or two or four. I miss the count-down.

I could always tell you how many days/months/years until I finished high school or graduated college. I miss being able to prattle off the next step without a thought.

Of course I have my BS answer to a plan. Oh, I would love to get my PR accreditation and I think that getting my masters would be a great way to continue to grow in the profession.

Realistically, I am way too poor to even dream about going back to school. Maybe, when I have finished paying for my undergrad and am willing to give up my evenings and weekends, I will consider going back to school an option. As far as getting my APR – no one cares, especially in the nonprofit world.

I just want to know where to go and what to do. (Sorry, Wendy, the magic 8 ball didn’t help.) I want the reassurance that I am making the right decision. I want to stop second-guessing myself.

Happy Trails to You

My friend Kindra is moving back to Washington this week to take a job working to improve hiking trails throughout the state. I am going to miss her stories, our lunches at Nooshi and her excellent advice. I wish her a safe and snow-free journey. We'll miss you!

Eyebrows

Eyebrows – That’s right I am completely sick of them. Why we continuously tweeze and trim, and wax and shape, I don’t understand. Frankly, it hurts and it’s a little silly.

Sure, I have read all the articles about how eyebrows accent your eyes and how a perfectly shaped brow is the icing on your made-up face. And, like thousands of other women, I stand in front of the mirror squinting, trying to grab stray hairs. It is a never ending process.

I always subscribed to the Brooke Shields style of eyebrows. I would much rather have fuller brows than over-pluck. The whole brow powder and brush thing seemed a bit over the top for me and the less I have to do, the better.

Recently, one of the girls in my office – she’s a notorious over-plucker – decided to have her eyebrows tattooed on. Now, all of us were a little skeptical – okay a lot skeptical about this. I think that everyone can agree that tattooing your make-up on isn’t usually a good idea.

My coworker returned after the procedure with slightly darker eyebrows, but they were still natural looking and had a nice shape. She had always spent time powdering her brows to fill them in so having the color tattooed has removed one item from her list of things to do in the morning.

Obviously she was lucky that the person doing her brows did a good job. However, I to wonder why women driven to such things? I mean a mistake could have been disastrous. Could you image having a crooked brow permanently on your face? Why do we do this to ourselves? Is it because we think guys care or is it because we do?

There’s No Place Like Home

Four days in Ohio, one holiday feast, lots of family, tons of Scrabble, cheap drinks, a few hands of poker and a five-year high school reunion sums up the last few days. Van was even brave (or crazy) enough to tag along.

The trip began a little shaky as our plane was delayed multiple times and Van wasn’t exactly aware that we had another hour and half drive from the Columbus airport to my hometown. (I really did tell him before, but we all know how well men can listen at times.) We were exhausted by the time we arrived in Sidney.

Thanksgiving Day was filled with lots of food and plenty of family. My brother and I took Van on a tour of Sidney. I think he was a little amazed we spent more time in the video store than we did driving around town. The day was mostly uneventful until Dad decided to move the new couch from the garage into the basement. As you can tell by the photos, I'm great at supervising.

Friday, Dad took Adam and Van out shooting. It is always interesting when you let your father take your boyfriend out to the middle of a field with several loaded guns. I figured if Van made it back my dad was okay with us dating. Everyone made it back and they all had a great time.

Later that night we met up with my friend Jenny and her fiancĂ© Gil. We ate dinner together at a local pizza place and went to our high school reunion. I wasn’t surprised at the people who attended; it was the same group who ever did anything in school.

Jenny did a good job at catching up with everyone who was there. I, on the other hand, hung out with Gil and Van. We did have a nice time catching up with Maria our other friend from school who is getting married New Year’s Eve. Van managed to not get into too much trouble, despite nearly getting Maria’s fiancĂ©, Rick, to do a keg stand. (Maybe next time, honey)

Saturday, we hung out at home and visited with family. My mom’s cousin, Jimmy and his wife brought their three kids over. We had a blast playing games with the kids. Sophie, 7, put me to shame at double’s solitaire. After she beat my brother at chess, we broke out the Jenga. Finally we found a game that the big kids could win.

After everyone headed out, we finished our Scrabble tournament. It’s official that Van is the Scrabble King. I was definitely a close second and let’s just say Mom kept getting lots of vowels.

Sunday, we took Adam back to OSU. Then we headed up to Otterbein, my alma mater. Van got the quick driving tour and all he could say was “Is that really it?” Yes that is really it. When I say that my college campus takes up two whole blocks, I’m not kidding.

We stopped for quick BBQ sandwich at Hoggy’s and headed back to the airport. It was hard to say goodbye to my parents, but it was a great trip.

A Day to Remember

For me, birthdays are always a strange mix of emotions. I can’t believe the amount of people who took time out of their lives to think about me on my special day. Both friends and family filled yesterday afternoon with phone calls and the last week with gifts. The day is also a little bittersweet, reminding me of how far I am from my family.

I was reminded by my Uncle Brent of many of the milestones that have shaped the last 23 years and the countless memories that made me smile. At dinner last night, Van reminded me of the milestones and memories that will shape year 24. (For the record – Van has excellent taste in jewelry.)

I hope that the next year is as full of life, joy and love as the last 23.

It’s a Scarf – Sort of

Finally, after about 20 hours of knitting, it’s a scarf – sort of. While it doesn’t look so bad in the photo, my scarf is way too short.

Last night I became completely impatient with this project and decided to cast of instead of getting another skein of yarn. Maybe that wasn’t such a good idea because my scarf ended up a little short and a little stumpy.

I wasn’t planning on giving this to anyone. It was just my attempt at learning to knit. There are rows that are noticeably not perfect and I didn’t realize exactly how much yarn it took to cast off so the top is a little knotted.

After I finished it, I wished I had kept going. I am not sure why I felt so compelled to finish at that particular moment. Perhaps, it was the list of projects I was excited about starting and, perhaps, it was that I couldn’t go back and fix the mistakes I made.

I'm weird. A meme...

Here are the rules: List 5 weird things about yourself or your pets. Tag 5 friends and list them. Then, those people need to write on their blogs about 5 weird things, and state the rules, and tag 5 more people. Don't forget to let the people you tag know by posting a comment on their blog!

Weird fact #1: I have a gag reflex when I eat watermelon, dim sum and cream cheese.

Weird fact #2: I am only scared of flying on the way to somewhere. I figure that if I can make it to my destination I can make it back home.

Weird fact #3: I think that the word grocery is a verb.

Weird fact #4: I have problems boiling eggs.

Weird fact #5: I wish I could rap.

Beat Michigan Week

Finally it’s Beat Michigan Week, the week-long build up to the biggest football game in Ohio. Featuring excessive partying (Is there such a thing?) and nail-biting anticipation, Beat Michigan Week is arguably the best unofficial holiday around. Hey, people decorate their yards so it might as well be a holiday.

The excitement this year is heightened by the number one ranking of OSU and Michigan’s number two ranking. It’s like the National Championship came early this year.

To help you get ready for the game, it’s TBDBITL!

One Crazy Mother Shucker

Last weekend, we went to the Urbanna Oysterfest, home of the Virginia State Oyster Shucking Championship. I have to admit that I am not crazy about oysters, but an adventure with my friends is always a good idea.

Byron’s company buses people to and from the festival for $35 with all you can drink beverage service. (Trust me, those mimosas made getting up at 5:30 a.m. totally worth it.) Anyway, we arrived at the festival ready to rage.

First on the agenda was the food. Byron and I decided on cinnamon rolls, Van headed for the cream of crab soup and despite it being 40 degrees outside, Jessica had a root beer float. Breakfast quickly devoured, Van and Byron decided it was time to move on to smoked turkey legs. Seriously, these things were huge and dripping with fat – the boys were thrilled. We headed back to the bus for more booze and so the boys could finish their battle with the turkey legs.

By this time, we had walked around the entire festival about five times and were ready for some entertainment. Thankfully, it was time for the oyster shucking competition.

After watching the amateurs struggle through 12 oysters, it was time for the professionals to take the stage. First up were the women, two sisters who had shucking in their blood. These two ladies tore through 24 oysters in a matter of minutes. The final times were announced. It was a tie. There was only one thing left to do – have a shuck off. The women came back to the stage and this time, Clementine was the winner.

Having decided the women’s champion, the men took their turn in an uneventful contest. It was then announced that the women’s champion would compete against the men’s champion, but this year there was a twist. The women’s champion just so happened to be the mother of the men’s champion. GASP!

The stage was set for this mother/son battle, like Van said “it was epic.” The whistle blew and they were off. It was a close race and all depended on the presentation. After what seemed like an eternity, the results were announced. Clementine won, proving that she was, indeed, one crazy mother shucker.

Voterific!

I have to say how great the volunteers were at the polling station in the Capital Memorial Adventist Church on Chesapeake Street, NW. Everyone was super-friendly, the station was well marked and incredibly organized. Voting was a breeze this morning. It was definitely a great way to start my day.

Thursday Thirteen #7 - In My Kitchen

I baked a pumpkin pie last night and I was reminded of all of the things that I love in my kitchen. Here are my thirteen favorite Kitchen Items.

1. My KitchenAid Mixer. This baby made me understand why guys like cars so much. Hearing that engine makes you want to jump for joy.
2. My pink silicon spooncula. It gets practically all of your cake batter out of your bowl.
3. Disposable pastry bags - whoever invented these was a genius.
4. My martini glass shaped cookie cutter. It isn’t the most practical cookie cutter, but it sure is fun.
5. Neon food coloring. I just love color.
6. Fiesta ware – It is microwave AND oven safe. The jumbo mugs are perfect for individual soufflĂ©s.
7. Orka oven mitt – No one wants to burn their hand and we all know how accident prone I am.
8. My authentic Pat O’Brien’s hurricane glasses from New Orleans. I couldn’t believe the glasses all survived the plane trip home. They were probably in better shape than I was.
9. My Smores maker that doubles as a fondue pot – it is a party waiting to happen. Sarah and Beth give the best gifts.
10. The huge Tupperware bowl that is the perfect storage container for cakes when flipped upside down.
11. A chef’s knife. It makes all the difference in the world when trying to slice a whole pineapple.
12. My pink apron.
13. The fridge, need I say more?

My Knitting Nightmare

So I decided that I my domestic goddess status wouldn’t be official until I had mastered the art of knitting. I am a pretty crafty person and I thought that this was going to be pretty easy.

Over the last couple of weeks, I patiently assemble everything that I needed to get started. I began with this winter knits kit that ended up being more frustrating than anything else. The “25 patterns, guide to basic techniques and everything need to complete one small project” turned out to be everything I needed to accomplish nothing at all.

Still determined, I went back and found a “knitting handbook.” As detailed as the directions looked, I still couldn’t make it work.

Two books and eight Web sites later, I have managed to put together about four rows of something that resembles a knit. I am pretty sure that I am still not knitting correctly, but I have to admit that I am rather proud of what I have accomplished. It is definitely a sign of progress and at this point, I will take anything I can get!

So if anyone has any helpful knitting hints, I am in desperate need!

When I Grow Up

Last Saturday, I went with Van to a dinner party hosted by his project manager, Mike. This was the first time I was being introduced to Van's co-workers and I wasn't sure what to expect.

We had an excellent time and spent the night eating, drinking great wine, and laughing. Carol and Mike love to travel and they shared some of their adventures. We even watched a video of them white water rafting in Africa a couple of years ago.

The video was fabulous. It was amazing watching two take on level five rapids as their raft literally disappeared in the rapids. Carol said that even their kids couldn’t believe that they did it.

Meeting Mike and Carol really made me want to have those kinds of adventures when I grow up. When I am fifty, I want to have the guts to take on the rapids. I want to travel around the world and have fascinating stories to share.

12. Have a caramel apple.

Sunny Sunday

I am sitting at the computer looking outside at the beautiful weather. It is a perfect fall day. Today is very optimistic way to begin a new week.

I think that everyone has those days or weeks that they are glad to leave behind. Last week was one of those weeks. While the week was filled with some great memories like being in New York, they were over-shadowed by the grim realities of life.

My boyfriend, unfortunately, had the worst of the bad news. His close friend was killed in Iraq on Wednesday. As much as you understand the realities of war, you never expect that it will be your friend who doesn't come back.

Van is keeping it together, he has always been the rock among his group of friends, but everyone is devastated. While I only knew Shane through the stories that Van shared, it is impossible not to grieve over the loss of someone with so much life yet to live.

There still plenty of rough days ahead, but it is reassuring to know that eventually the sun will come out.

Thursday Thirteen #5 - New York City

I just returned home from a trip to New York for work. We didn't have much time for fun, but I was reminded of thirteen things that I love about New York City

1. The cabs are so much cheaper than in DC. The meter system is so much better than "zones."
2. All public places are smoke free.
3. Things are always open.
4. There are amazing restaurants.
5. Dylan's Candy Bar.
6. Serendipity.
7. Spending time with my friends.
8. Every time I visit the City I experience something new.
9. The City is only a few hours away.
10. Visiting New York makes me appreciate the cleanliness of our Metro.
11. Shopping - I was really good this trip, but like I said I didn't have much time for fun.
12. You run into so many different types of people.
13. I love exploring all of the different neighborhoods.

Shhhh.....

I am sitting in a perfectly quiet room, okay except for the sound of the keyboard. I often forget how refreshing quiet can be.

For my senior capstone class, we had to spend one week under the strictest communication depravation. That meant no talking on the phone, no radio, no television, no reading (except class assignments), no internet and no writing.

As the week progressed, there were numerous paths that people took. There were those who just outright cheated. They decided that they just couldn't take being so isolated from the world and just gave up. Then there were those who made a good effort to abide by the rules, but were still irritated about the assignment. Finally, there was the group who admittedly missed the communication, but was comfortable without the noise.

I definitely fell into the last group. Cheating during the week was completely unavoidable, but I found the experience to be immensely enlightening. Having a week during my senior year, in the midst of the job search and the uncertainty, where I had nothing left to do, but think was exactly what I needed. I found it amazingly reassuring to know that I could be on my own, isolated from the rest of the world and be okay.

While, I am not in a rush to spend another week in communication depravation, I find that taking a break gives me an opportunity to recharge my batteries. I return to the hustle and bustle of my daily life with a fresh perspective.

The Next Big Thing

The other day I was walking through the Borders across the street from my office on one of my many lunchtime excursions. I was wondering around like I usually do without purpose. I made my way past the magazines and began my loop around the upstairs when I encountered shelf after shelf of Christmas cards.

I was a little surprised, but relented. I understand that it is technically fall and people do send their cards right after Thanksgiving, therefore, they do need to buy them in advance. I get the marketing. I figured that the best thing to do was to ignore them and continue on my way.

I was still contemplating the cards when I wound up right in the middle of a huge display of 2007 calendars. Now this is where I draw the line.

Seriously I understand the need to plan ahead, but is this year so bad that we can't wait to skip ahead?

Why must we always be searching for the next big thing? We can’t be happy to have the Christmas cards; we have to have the calendars too? Why can't we be content with the way things are at this very moment.

Maybe, the problem is that we don't let the little things that are happening at this moment bring us joy. Sure when we catch the train we are happy or if things don't fall apart at work it's a good day. Shouldn't we be exuberant that we spent one more day with someone we loved, that there was food in the fridge or that we were simply alive?

Frankly, I refuse to trade in every good day that I have left in 2006 for some what-if dream about 2007.

OH - IO

Yesterday was the Ohio State game against Penn State, and thankfully we won. As much as I love my Buckeyes, there is always a little more at stake when they play Penn State - bragging rights. (Okay, not quite as much at stake as the Michigan game.)

My best friend, Sarah, is a Penn State girl and every year we sweat it out to see whose team ends up on top. Last year, the Buckeyes lost in a nail-biter to Penn State and I had to make the the call of shame acknowledging our defeat.

I have to say that I am so glad to have redemption and I promise to not tease Sarah too much.

The University

On Saturday, I accompanied my boyfriend to The University of Virginia for their homecoming game. While, unfortunately, they lost the game, the experience was amazing.

There is always something so insightful about seeing where a person grew up, meeting their family or participating in one of their traditions. Sharing that experience first-hand allows you to connect on a whole new level. Every story and memory that person has shared with you suddenly has a deeper meaning because you can picture the events more clearly.

The college I attended wasn’t particularly steeped in tradition. I attended only two football games during the four years I was there, never joined a sorority and lived off campus for two years. The extra-curricular activities that I was involved with connected me more to students at other universities than to students at my own. I spent about two years interning almost full-time. I was so focused on what I was going to do after college that I never experienced college.

My boyfriend, on the other hand, relished college. He learned everything he could about everything. He joined a fraternity, went to parties, attended football games and embraced all of the UVA traditions.

Needless to say, Van had tried to prepare my for my first UVA experience. He explained that girls wore sundresses to the game and how it was tradition for the guys to wear jackets and ties. He described the University in detail, the history and shared a few stories. I thought that I was pretty prepared.

Then I took about three steps onto the Lawn and there they were, girls in sundresses and guys with ties, all with mixed drinks in-hand. I couldn’t help, but burst into uncontrollable laughter. I have never seen such a thing in my entire life. I felt like I had mistakenly ended up at the Kentucky derby instead of a football game.

So that was what Van was used to. It was at that second that our differences became almost sobering. I couldn’t help wondering how I fit into his world. What caused him to give up the cute blonde in a sundress with a Southern accent for a sweatshirt wearing Yankee?

I have come to realize that in the same way I have traded in my vision of Prince Charming for a republican (gasp), good-ole-boy from Virginia. While the whole experience at UVA brought to life so many of our differences, it made me appreciate the fact that we love each other for who we are not because we meet some predetermined idea of the perfect partner should be.

Thursday Thirteen #2 - Rainy Days

It is a very rainy Thursday here in DC and rain in the city can be miserable. In an effort to be optimistic, here are my Thirteen reasons to like Rainy Days.

1. Rainy days are the best days to sleep in.
2. I love the way it smells when it rains because it reminds me of being at camp as a teenager.
3. Rainy days remind me to slow down.
4. Hot chocolate, soup and coffee all taste better on rainy days.
5. Rainy days make me truly appreciative of having a warm, dry apartment to come home to.
6. There is always something childlike about walking around in the rain.
7. Rainy days remind me of the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s and how romantic it is to kiss in the rain.
8. I love the feel of slow, misty rain.
9. Rain forces me to be creative. I have to figure out what to do instead of going on a picnic, attending a football game, or if the power goes out.
10. If it is raining then it isn’t snowing.
11. Nothing feels better than my over-sized college sweatshirt on a rainy day.
12. April showers do bring May flowers.
13. On rainy days you don’t have to worry about doing your hair because it doesn’t matter.

Five Years

Five years ago, I was finishing class on my second day of my freshman year of college. I remember class being cancelled as everyone became aware of what was happening.

Five years ago, I had never been to New York City and I had no personal connections to anyone there.

Five years ago, I lived in a bubble. I was completely content to not venture out of my safe suburban life in Ohio.

Five years ago, I didn’t understand that the stakes were so high.

Five years ago, I was reminded that life is a precious gift and to be grateful for each day with friends and family.

Thou Shall Not Damage Thy Boyfriend’s Golf Clubs

Last night I committed one of the mortal sins for any girlfriend. I am fully guilty of sin number three – Thou shall not damage thy boyfriend’s golf clubs, especially when they are new. (In case you are wondering, number one is cheating and two is wrecking the car.)

I am one of those people with a gift for the unlikely. I should have known that using Van’s new clubs at the driving range as I was learning wasn’t a smart idea.

Sunday and Monday passed at the range without incident. I was actually doing pretty well until last night. Van was stressed and thought that going to the driving range would be a good way to unwind. As usual, I was along for the ride.

We got a basket of balls and Van went first. I took my turn and was doing pretty miserably. Somehow, instead of getting better I was getting worse. It was time for my second turn, I put the ball on the tee, pulled my arms back and WHACK - I hit the ball holder. Upon closer inspection, Van discovered that I had actually dented his driver.

This was the first time since we have been dating that he has been really, truly angry with me and I was furious at myself because I knew how much these clubs meant to him. Let’s just say that the ride home was less than pleasant.

The whole time he never raised his voice. Honestly, I probably would have felt better if he would have yelled at me. He was amazingly calm, but I could tell how mad he was.

Eventually, we did make up and we survived the first big test of our relationship. This experience reminded me how grateful I am for character of the man I am with.

Putt-Putt

This weekend my boyfriend and I finally faced off. We have been talking about going to play putt-putt (or miniature golf as Van likes to call it – it’s another of our pop vs. soda battles) since we first started dating.

I am not a competitive person by nature - my boyfriend, on the other hand, wants nothing more than to crush his opponents so badly that their children tremble in fear when he walks by. (Seriously – I am not exaggerating.) Until this point, we have for one reason or another, not gotten into direct competition, but the time had finally come.

I’m fairly decent at putt- putt so I felt pretty confident that I could make it a close game. Van and I picked up our equipment and decided on the course. “So what’s the wager?” he asked as we approached the first hole. All hopes of this being a quiet, friendly game disappeared. We quickly settled on the loser buying a golf glove for the winner – the stakes weren’t too high so I was feeling better.

Van took the first shot and the game was on. To my surprise, I won the first hole and then the next two. My confidence was building and by the end of the 9th hole I had a four stroke lead. I admit that I was feeling the rush of competition.

Right about the 11th hole Van lost his ball in water and had to get a replacement. Let’s just say - new ball: good for Van and bad for me. On the 14th hole all evidence of my lead had vanished and the last four holes are too painful to talk about.

Final score: Van 80, Katie 87.

As competitive as Van is, I have to say that he was gracious winner and he didn’t tease me about it too much, but I am officially calling for a rematch.

Thursday Thirteen #1 - The Museum

After this weekend, the American History Museum in DC will be closing its doors for two years. Since it is my favorite Smithsonian musuem, here are the Thirteen Things that I will miss about the American History Museum

1. Julia Child's kitchen - my absolute favorite thing.
2. Kermit the Frog - I love the Muppets.
3. The Ruby Slippers from the Wizard of Oz - I always wished I had a pair.
4. The First Ladies Exhibit - can you believe some of the stuff they wore?
5. Museum Store - face it, I love to shop!
6. Fonzie's Jacket - he is still cool.
7. The ride cars from Disneyland - one of my favorite childhood memories.
8. Superman's outfit - reminds me of my Dad and brother.
9. Lance Armstrong's bike - I love Lance!
10. Oscar the Grouch - reminds me of my brother growing up.
11. The Dollhouse - I always wanted one growing up.
12. The Old Lunch Boxes - I love vintage stuff like this.
13. All of the Pop Culture Goodness.

Confessions of a Picky Eater

Growing up in a small town in Ohio our idea of ethnic cuisine was Taco Bell (where I refuse to eat), two Chinese restaurants and Italian (not that we had an Italian restaurant, but I did occasionally make it out of town). My diet was pretty much meat, potatoes and a vegetable. Nothing was ever really spicy or too outside the box.
** If my mother is reading this – The food was great, we always ate as a family and my mother ALWAYS made me try something at least once.

When I went to college, I started to broaden my horizons. I retried several foods that I previously disliked and things like spinach and yogurt are now part of my ever-expanding diet. Although, watermelon still makes me want to vomit. I also tried Indian and Thai food for the first time (Thanks, Sarah).

After moving to DC, I have continued to be open-minded by checking tapas and sushi off my list. My weekends spent with friends in New York are always good for an out of the ordinary dinning experience. Jenny and Gil took me to this great Spanish-Cuban fusion restaurant (Gil was right the bread was amazing).

For all this being said, I am still a picky eater. Despite my effort to try new things, ordering dinner still slightly resembles that scene in When Harry Met Sally – I have to have my salads without cucumbers, onions, definitely without peppers, I don’t like blue cheese and could I have fat-free dressing on the side? All of this is the bane of my boyfriend’s life.

Last night, my boyfriend made potstickers for dinner. I had never had them before so I tried them and didn’t really care for them. Before I could say anything he said, “Let me guess they’re not your favorite.” He had me - that was exactly what I was going to say. “You don’t like anything. I wish that you liked more foods,” he continued. Frankly, I wish I did too.

The trouble with being a picky eater is that, as much as I try new things, I continuously add to the list of things that don’t like. It’s not like I can just decide that I like the way something tastes when I really don’t. It would be so nice to go out with my friends and not have to get my own pizza. As much as I love food, it would be amazing to really enjoy the new foods that I try. Here’s wishing…

Stop Staring at My Cupcakes!

For those of you who don't know, I love to bake - and by bake I'm talking Martha-Stewart-
from-scratch-baking. My confections are most frequently created for my coworkers. I love to bring in some goody for a birthday or just because.

Once completed my cake, cookies, etc. must make the arduous journey on the Metro from my apartment to my office downtown. Last Friday proved to be another adventure on the Metro trekking a glazed lemon pound cake into work as birthday surprise for one of my coworkers.

In the year that I have lived in DC, I have come to realize that few things excite curious stares and interesting comments like a freshly-baked goody in a crowded rush hour train.

Typically, the curious glance and smile as I precariously balance a plate of cookies, my work bag and hang on as the train slams to a halt at each stop, is an amusing way to start the day. I am always grateful to people who offer their seat, but I must admit that there have been times when the curious glances have turned into all-out envious stares.

I have found that nothing solicits these stares like my colorfully iced cupcakes. I am not really one for being the center of attention and I find it is slightly disconcerting to have someone stare at me for the duration of my ride to work.

While I admit that my cupcakes are slightly out-of-place on the morning train – and I have no qualms with the curious glances, I must say that I would appreciate it if people would stop staring at my cupcakes.

5 Things to do on Metro

I'm a DC snob (everyone has their faults) and I admit that I find the thought of having to Metro more than five stops anywhere appalling - after all, that is why I live in the District.

Now that I am dating a Virginia boy, I have found myself frequently making exhaustingly long Metro trips to Old Town. In order to appease my ADD (and yours too), I have compiled my 5 favorite things to do on Metro.

  1. Count the "CrackBerrys" - my high score 9. (Hint -this one is especially good during morning rush hour)
  2. The iPod Guessing Game - try to figure out what songs/type of music people are playing in those little white earphones. (I like to trick people by going with something by Common or the Ying Yang Twins)
  3. Metro Police - who on your train is breaking one of Metro's rules. (You people with a cup of coffee watch out.)
  4. Fashion Police - give the red carpet review of your fellow riders. (Always more fun with a friend)
  5. Find the Spy - As I learned at the International Spy Museum, DC has more spies than almost any other place in the world.

The Need to Fix:
Some Think it’s Meddling – I’m Going with Mediating

Okay – granted there are few times when you absolutely should not step in, but is it really that wrong to want to fix things?

Typically, women are notorious for stepping into situations that aren’t necessarily theirs to begin with. We have that urge to make sure everyone is happy and often times forgo the possible consequences.

As I am venting to my boyfriend (whom I love dearly) about the present situation, he simply asks, “Why did you get yourself involved? “Didn’t you learn from the last time you got in middle of your friends and it backfired?”

Well, no, apparently I didn’t learn because here I am. As much as I hate to admit it, he has a point.

So where does that leave me?

I know that as hard as I try I will still on occasion attempt to “mediate” situations. I know also that occasionally my efforts won’t work out as planed. When that happens, shouldn’t I (and all other mediators) be granted some clemency? Our efforts are strictly driven by a desire for everyone to be happy and in my book that’s not such a bad thing.

Starbuck’s High-Maintenance

Every Friday I indulge my inner coffee-diva and make a trip to Starbucks. Usually it is my reward for making through the week, at least that is my justification for spending $4 on a cup of coffee.

Last Friday, I placed my usual order and waited in line and as I was waiting one of my coworkers came in. She placed her order and we started talking quietly. The conversation lulled as the baristas started calling out orders.

In the silence I hear “venti-iced-vanilla-sugar-free-skim.” I make my way to the counter, pick up my coffee and walk back to wait with my coworker. As I walked back to meet my coworker, I realize I am completely Starbuck’s high-maintenance.

I pride myself on being low-maintenance. I can get ready for work in 20 minutes, go days without wearing make-up and I have no fear about breaking a nail. For some reason, as low-maintenance as I am, I have to be a “venti-iced-vanilla-sugar-free-skim” the instant I enter a Starbucks.

On the way back to the office, my coworker and I wonder – what is it about Starbuck’s that turns a perfectly normal girl into high-maintenance?

Another MySpace Addict

Hello, my name is Katie and I am a MySpace addict.

There I said it. Isn't the first step admitting you have a problem?

I have been a member of MySpace for less than two weeks and already I am addicted.

I was intially very skeptical about the whole MySpace trend. Could it really be that interesting? Isn't it enough that I spend all-day on the copmputer at work? How many people would I really know? Isn't this just a way to cyber-stalk all those people who teased you in high school just so you can prove that you are finally cool? (okay - maybe that is just me)

We had been talking about MySpace at work and some of my friends had accounts so I finally bit the bullet and signed up. Well, the curiousity might have had something to do with it - maybe.

Once I had my account it didn't take me long to realize how great MySpace really is. I had so much fun customizing my page (yes, I know I'm a nerd) and looking around. I was surprised at how many of my friends had pages that I didn't know about.

In the last two weeks I managed to recconnect with a couple of people who I had completely lost touch with, found a new creative outlet and learned a bit more about some of the people I already new. Maybe this addiction isn't such a bad thing.

Check out my addiction -
