Okay. I love Paula Deen. She is the grandmother that everyone wants. (I still heart you too Nana) I love watching her shows on Food Network. She just seems like so much fun be around. I usually try to avoid her recipes because of the butter/fat content. Not that I am the healthiest eater in the world, but I do try to avoid recipes that feature butter as the primary ingredient.
Last Sunday, I splurged and had Paula Deen dinner night. I made Chef Jack's Corn Chowder and Paula's Garlic Cheese Biscuits. I did make several attempts to try to make the recipes a little better. I used fat-free reduced sodium chicken broth instead of regular and fat-free half and half instead of regular. I also substituded heart smart bisquick and cheddar made from 2 percent milk in the biscuits. Everything was worth the effort and the result was true comfort food. Van especially liked the biscuits and they were super easy to make. Both recipes ended up being keepers.

House Hunting
As much as I love my HGTV, I have to admit I hate trying to find a house in Northern Virginia. I knew this wasn't going to be easy, but I had no idea how stressful this whole entire process would be. We have spent countless hours looking at all types of houses in all of the different suburbs in our area. I feel like we are being realistic about what we can afford. We're obviously not trying to find a place one block from the metro with all the bells and whistles for $300,000. Although, we would be ecstatic if that did exist. Maybe today will be the day...

Still Here
I haven't disappeared again. Unfortunately, my laptop decided to stop working. Boo! I'm hoping that it will be fixed soon and I will be able to catch up on my blogging. There are so many exciting things happening - we're trying to find a house, I made great pumpkin cookies and we got our wedding pics back from our photographer - I can't wait to fill everyone in.

Thursday Thirteen - Debate Watching
1. Did everyone miss government class in school? 2. I'm really glad that I bought wine tonight. 3. I think that there should be a moratorium on the word maverick. 4. The real-time poll on CNN is a nice addition. 5. Sarah Palin's highlights are really nice. 6. I can't believe that Palin wants to strengthen the No Child Left Behind Act because it's worked oh so well. 7. Why can't we be friends? 8. Candidates aren't comedians. 9. It looked like Biden had a little Botox. 10. Does anyone really win? 11. At the end of the day, we aren't we just stuck with politicians. 12. Dear CNN, do we really need an hour and twenty minutes of post-debate analysis? 13. The best thing I've seen so far tonight is the preview for Religulous. |

Back Home
We're back from our last wedding event, our reception in Ohio. We had a wonderful time visiting with family and had a great turn-out. The slideshow I made was a big hit and was worth all the time I spent putting it together.
Thankfully, I started to finally feel better right before we left, but I, of course, managed to get Van sick. Unfortunately, he's still not feeling better. (Although, in our tiny apartment there wasn't much hope of not spreading my germs.) I've been trying my best to help him feel better, but it's just going to have to run its course.
I'm a little sad that it's all over. I'm going to miss my dress, being with our friends and family, and of course -- the tiara! The good thing, though, is that now that it's over we have the pictures to look forward too!!! Our fabulous photographers sent us a sneak preview of the some of the pictures so we could include them in the slideshow for the Ohio reception. The pictures Don and Lindsay sent were amazing and we couldn't be happier. Now we can't wait to see the rest.
Here's the slideshow from our Ohio reception - featuring the work of the extremely talented Don and Lindsay Mears-

Sickies
Between all the hustle and bustle of the last month and the season change, I manged to get sick. Yuck! I was feeling pretty miserable yesterday. I spent the day sleeping, coughing and being cranky. Van was the perfect hubby and made soup for me and made sure that I was drinking lots of water. I was so bad that I even fell asleep watching the LSU / Auburn game. And that was a really exciting game.
Thankfully, I'm feeling better today and I'm hoping that by tomorrow I will be back to normal. The silver lining was that I was able to sit still and work on thank you notes and the slideshow for the reception in Ohio next weekend. I will put the link to the slideshow on the blog as soon as it's finished.

Happiness
If you didn't get the hint from my decor, I have quite the sweet tooth. So for me, one of the best things about our wedding was our fabulous cake! We loved the yellow cake with lemon curd and raspberry filling at Jean Jacques Bakery so much that we got it for all four layers. As luck would have it, we ended up having plenty of cake left after the wedding.
The wonderful thing about Jean Jacques is that they give couples a gift certificate for a free cake on their 1st anniversary so there isn't any reason at all to try to save the top tier in the freezer for a whole year. Which, let's be honest, creeps me out. Anyway... since there wasn't anything holding us back we have been sneaking small slices every few days. Each and every slice brings back happy memories.

Fall, Football and Food
The summer flew by with a storm of wedding activities and now that everything is over I have landed right at the start of my favorite season. I love Fall. I live for the football games, holidays, spices, cooler weather, sweaters and comfort foods that come with this time of year.
During the summer, it often seems unbearable to stand in front of the hot stove as you spend hours working on a dish. In the Fall, the warmth of the stove or oven seems like a cozy place to spend a Saturday. Last weekend, I completely indulged myself by watching the Ohio State game and cooking a fabulous chicken.
I decided to start working my way through the new cookbooks we received as wedding gifts. I picked up Kylie Kwong’s Simple Chinese Cooking and found the soy sauce chicken recipe. Using light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, Chinese rice wine, spring onions, orange peel and cinnamon, I made a stock that I used to cook a 3 lb free-range chicken.
The slow-cooking process (3 hours) made the chicken extremely tender and flavorful. Not too mention how fabulous our kitchen smelled as the stock simmered away. The stock was awesome on our jasmine rice and all together it was an excellent meal. I even attempted to chop the chicken in the Chinese-style demonstrated in the book. I definitely need more practice, but it wasn’t bad for a first try.
I definitely earned the good wife award for this dish so it comes highly recommended.

Now That I Have My Mrs. Degree
I know that I have been MIA. I took a bit of a sabbatical while I was out earning my Mrs. All of our hard work paid off and we had a gorgeous wedding. I know, I'm a bit bias. We both agreed that the day couldn't have gone better. Now that we are back from our honeymoon and everything has settled down, I am planning on getting back to my blogging routine.

Superficialious
I recently discovered Polyvore, a site that lets you build collages from items found in stores online. This site is a shoppers heaven and I have to admit - superbly superficial. I love it. You can add items that you already own and mix and match with new items from other stores. Check out how cute this sequin chiffon top from Charlotte Russe looks with my Sass and Bide jeans.

My Favorite Kind of Promotion
M&Ms is launching a new line of ice cream treats and to get the word out they were giving away free icecream bars by my office yesterday. I was lucky and snagged one before they ran out. I have to admit that it tasted pretty darn good, but then again, who doesn't love free icecream on a summer day?

My Shower!
What a lucky bride I am! My shower was amazing and I was completely spoiled. My bridesmaids surprised me with beautiful centerpieces with my name, a recipe collection from all my friends and family, and lots of cupcakes! It was the perfect day with family and friends.
The restaurant where we had the shower.
The super-cute centerpieces.
All my swag - seriously, I must have been an extra-nice bride-to-be!

I Might Have Crossed a Line
I'm pretty sure I crossed that line and I'm now officially a Bridezilla. I couldn't be content to just put regular bottles of water in our out-of-town guest bags, I just had to replace each label with my own wedding design. (I know, I have problems.)
I have to admit they look pretty cute and my boss liked them so much she asked me to make some for her son's wedding in June.

Pool Days
The pool at our apartment building opened this weekend and the weather couldn't have been more perfectly. I slathered on the sunscreen (SPF 45 - no one likes to burn) and headed down to the pool. Thankfully, my new J Crew swimsuit arrived just in time.
Armed with my iPod and magazines, I was ready to chill. I settled in on one of the empty lounge chairs and basked in the sun. I love the way the sun feels on your skin and the smell of suncreen. I let my mind drift as I listened to Kenny Chesney.
It was the perfect afternoon.

It's the Best Christmas EVER!!!!
Yes, Van and I are the proud owners of a brand new Wii. And --- It only took us calling every store in the DC metro area every single day for an entire week. Now that we have it, it was so worth the effort.
Van went to Toys R Us as soon as the store opened Sunday to snatch one up off their latest shipment. Of course we couldn't just get the Wii, we also purchased an extra controller (I have to play too), Mario Cart - with steering wheel, and a charging station. Four hundred dollars later, we were in Wii Heaven.
Seriously, I love it. I think that its great. I could play everyday. Of course the best part of the whole day was beating Van at golf.

My Latest Guilty Pleasure
I was searching online for a return address stamp for the wedding invitations and I found this fabulous blog, The Preppy Wedding. Seriously, I could read it for days.
I know that most people could care less, but with my wedding less than 4 months away I found this blog to be wealth of fabulous resources. I just love the look and feel of the site. I’m hoping that my wedding will be as just as classy and elegant.

Chicago
What do you do with 24 hours in Chicago?
Eat - of course!
I made a quick trip to Chicago for work last week. Thankfully, I had a few hours to walk around Michigan Ave and grab dinner with my friend, Rory.
Salad and Strawberry Lemonade - Not a bad start!Eat - of course!

Whew!
Our annual meeting is finally over! Yippee! I am so glad to get my life back. I know that haven't been a frequent blogger of late, but it was a seemingly impossible task between 12-hour work days, wedding planning and tennis lessons. Now that I am back to regular work hours I can finally start catching up with all my blogging friends!

Thursday Thirteen - Sick Edition
I finally caught the nasty virus that has been going around our office. Here are my thirteen Thursday thoughts on my week. 1. I went to the doctor twice this week. 2. I think the pharmacists at Target have seen me more than their families this week. 3. Robitussin tastes yucky. 4. I'm tired of eating soup. 5. Ice cream really does make your throat feel better. 6. I'm on my third bottle of musinex. 7. I have given up on being able to breathe through my nose. 8. I am finally starting to get my voice back. 9. Our living room has turned into germ central. 10. I have used Lysol on every surface of our apartment multiple times. 11. My headache finally ceased. 12. My last couple of days can be summed up in three words sleeping, coughing and eating. 13. I'm sick of being sick. |

I'm Done Being a Recluse
Let's just say 2008 wasn't off to the best start. Below is a quick summary to catch up.
- We were hit by another car while driving on 495. (We are both fine)
- Van has been without his car for almost 1 month.
- He finally was able to get a rental car about 2 weeks ago.
- So far the damage to Van's car is more that $10,000. (Thank goodness for insurance)
- Van switched jobs but is still stuck resolving some issues from the last job.
- We had a weekend of nonstop fighting which ended up being the result of pent-up stress.
- I have a new supervisor at work.
- I'm in the middle of our busiest season at work.
- After three trips to Staples and about 8 attempts, we finally mailed the save the dates.
- I'm out one very cute, very new shoe. (More on that later)
Thankfully, things are turning around. Van's new job is going really well, my new supervisor is very nice, van should get his car back in early March and we have more than made up for any fighting.

What does your registry say about you?
Van and I have been spending a lot of time lately building our wedding registry. We have spent many hours debating the merit of certain brands of toasters, blenders, knives and cookware to select the exact items we want most. We have also been worried about what certain items would say to our guests. For instance:
Vacu Vin Wine Saver - I start things that I don't finish.
Vacu Vin Wine Saver Extra Stoppers - Maybe I start a lot of things I don't finish.
Simple Chinese Cooking a Cookbook by Kylie Kwong - I'm trying to impress my soon-to-be-mother-in-law
Black and Decker 6-Volt Cordless Screwdriver - Van must have been working on the registry that day.
20 Pieces of Lock&Lock Airtight Storage Containers - We love Lock&Lock!
Glass Pitcher, Glass Vases and Glass Canisters - Van is putting way too much trust in me not to break something.
Culinary Torch - Clearly, I am asking for trouble.
Blue Dessert Knife - We eat enough cakes, brownies and can't leave alone bars to warrant getting a special knife.
Metrokane Rabbit Corkscrew - I apparently need to get into my wine faster.

No Cell Phone=No Shopping
This afternoon I decided to take a short walk around the area by my office during my lunch hour and as I often do, I called my dad to chat. I usually walk and talk, occasionally stopping in a store if something catches my attention. I’m not a super spender, but there are times when I do purchase items during those little “walk and talks.”
Today I started my walk on Connecticut heading up toward Dupont Circle. I stopped in the Gap to check out the new spring merchandise and wandered around there for a bit before moving on.
Still on my phone, I decided to stop in a little shop just South of Dupont Circle. It’s a cute little store that sells books, novelties, accessories and clothing. The store was fairly empty. There was maybe one other customer and two sales women. I started looking at the books when I felt a tap on the shoulder. It was one of the saleswomen informing me that the store has a no cell phone policy.
I promptly left and finished my conversation all the while feeling kind of irked. I decided to return to the store to inquire about the policy. I entered the still empty store and approached the sales counter.
“I didn’t realize that there was a no cell phone policy in the store,” I said to the saleswoman. “If I had known I wouldn’t have come in and I wish that there would have been something clearly marked on the door that I would have seen before I came in.”
The saleswoman started explaining that there wasn’t a lot of space and there was notice posted near the door and that she appreciated that I had respected the policy.
I said that I understood but that I would probably not visit the store again and left.
I admittedly have a whole third-grader-have-to-please-can’t-do-anything-wrong issue. I truly felt like I was being chastised. I wasn’t screaming on the phone, laughing hysterically or being a disturbance. There wasn’t anyone around me at all.
I think that I would have felt differently about the situation if the saleswoman would have taken a different approach. She could have waited until I was off the phone and just said something like “I just wanted to let you know for the next time that you visit that we have a no cell phone policy” instead of pouncing on me as soon as I entered the store, especially since the store wasn’t crowded.
I completely agree with having a no cell phone policy at the movie theater or in a spa. I would even go along with having one at an extremely high-end store like Vera Wang or Hermes. If you are about to blow $1000 on one item of clothing you should have all the quiet you need. Having a no cell phone policy at a little gift boutique seems pretentious to me. What if you are in the middle of trying on clothes or waiting to pay when your babysitter calls about your kids? Do you pick up the phone and stay in the store defiantly? Do you drop every potential purchase and accept the call once you are outside the door of the store?
Maybe I have strayed too far from etiquette, taking for granted my right to talk on the phone or even overacting. What do you think? Would you shop at a similar store if you knew they had a no cell phone policy? Especially one so diligent about enforcing the policy? Maybe it all depends on whether you were already on the phone or not.
Oh, I Sure Did!
Yup, I wore flip flops on my way to work today. I don't care what month it is, if it is 71 degrees it's time to wear flip flops. Thankfully my pedi still looks great!

Deception
If I didn't know better I would think it was Spring. The warm sun, cheerful mood, bright skies and everyone milling around sans coat. It doesn't seem quite fair that in a few days we'll be back to the cold, chilly winds and gray winter days. What a perfect day to enjoy the moment.

A Little Beach Break
I'm finally back from all of my holiday excursions. Van and I had a blast on our cruise to the Bahamas. The weather was simply beautiful and thankfully I didn't get a sunburn.
It wasn't quite the Love Boat...
We were finally able to get off the boat.
Beach refreshment, anyone?
Maybe if I wish hard enough I can be back on the beach.
Van conquering the rockwall.
